CASE STUDY: LEAK DETECTION INNOVATION 

One example of this hands-on innovation is the development of a leak detection solution led by our Operations Technology (OT) team interns. This initiative focuses on enhancing monitoring capabilities within critical infrastructure spaces, such as IDF (Intermediate Distribution Frame) and MDF (Main Distribution Frame) rooms. 

The system uses environmental sensors connected through a wireless Ethernet gateway to monitor for potential leaks. When a leak is detected, based on changes in electrical charge, the system automatically sends alerts to users through a connected software platform. By integrating technologies such as Packet Power systems, Modbus communication, and centralized data software, the solution provides real-time visibility and response capabilities. 

This project reflects Miller Electric’s focus on proactive monitoring and smart infrastructure, ensuring that potential issues are identified and addressed before they escalate into larger problems.

WHY LEAK DETECTION MATTERS 

Effective leak detection plays a critical role in maintaining operational efficiency, protecting infrastructure, and reducing risk. In environments where sensitive equipment is present, even minor leaks can lead to costly damage, downtime, and safety concerns. 

By implementing systems that detect issues early and provide real-time alerts, organizations can shift from reactive troubleshooting to proactive maintenance. This approach not only protects critical assets but also enhances reliability, supports system performance, and improves overall operational control.

INTERN PERSPECTIVE: LEARNING THROUGH IMPACT 

For Operations Technology Intern Austin Middleton, working on the leak detection project, has been a defining part of his experience at Miller Electric. 

“Interning at Miller is so special because I am working on hands-on projects every day and getting the opportunity to get real experience each and every day, not just watching or listening,” Austin shared. “Being able to physically install these devices and see the data come in in real time is a rewarding experience.” 

Throughout the project, Austin has taken on responsibilities that include learning new software systems, understanding how networked technologies operate together, and collaborating with other interns and supervisors to bring the solution to life. His work with tools such as EntroCIM software, Modbus communication, and networking systems has helped him build technical skills while contributing directly to a real deliverable.

Beyond technical knowledge, the experience has also fostered growth in communication, collaboration, and professional development. “Learning outside of the classroom here at Miller has been one of the best learning experiences of my life,” he said, reflecting on how the internship has expanded his career outlook.

LEADERSHIP PERSPECTIVE: DEVELOPING FUTURE TALENT 

From a leadership perspective, projects like this highlight the value interns bring to both innovation and execution. Under the guidance of Project Associate Delali Ekpeh, who began his own journey as a Miller Electric intern, the team is not only building a solution but also strengthening the company’s long-term capabilities. 

Interns contribute to initiatives that are connected to the broader Operations Technology network, including monitoring panels, EV chargers, and uninterruptible power systems (UPS). By working on interconnected projects, they gain a deeper understanding of how individual systems come together to support complex infrastructure. 

Delali emphasizes that this real-world exposure is essential: providing interns with the opportunity to work on meaningful solutions prepares them for long-term success while strengthening the organization as a whole. His own experience, from intern to full-time professional, demonstrates the impact of Miller Electric’s investment in mentorship.

“My mentor taught me what I know, and now I’m able to pass that knowledge on,” he shared. “It builds an internal pipeline that fosters growth.”
