Why a Method of Procedure (MOP) is Essential

A Method of Procedure (MOP) is crucial to prioritizing a facility’s safety and uptime through a stepby-step plan written by industry experts. Developing a detailed MOP is the most important part— but not everyone in the industry can do it.  For Miller Electric Company, this technical know-how is a differentiator.

An MOP is a formal, highly controlled document that standardizes the work sequence and eliminates guesswork. It reduces the risk of financial or operational loss for our clients.  Writing one requires:

  • A full understanding of the electrical system and how underlying issues may impact each piece of equipment at every step.
  • An understanding of how the client’s facility sequence operates and what it needs to remain effective.

Expertise That Protects Critical Facilities

Miller emphasizes performing quality work in critical facilities.  Without the right people in the right place and the right technical knowledge and experience, a comprehensive MOP could be challenging.  Our clients depend on us to create one that protects both safety and continuity.

“We thrive in this arena because we actively seek individuals with critical facilities experience and prepare them by sending them to OEM (original equipment manufacturer) training,” says Chad Guinn, Vice President, Facility Solutions. “Doing this gives us a huge advantage over others in the industry.”

“We go above and beyond with our Critical Power team and make sure they have the specialized training needed to execute in any type of facility,” says TJ Scarbrough, Director of Facility Solutions.

Our Four-Step MOP Development and Execution Process

  1. Developing the Plan:
The first step to creating an MOP is developing the plan with input from involved parties.

  2. Confirming the Plan: The Review and Dry Run
The next step is to review and confirm the MOP via a dry run, ensuring the plan’s accuracy and securing the stamp of approval from all the parties involved.

  3. Executing the Plan: Sign-Off on Every Step
Execution requires the right people—properly-trained Miller employees. A MOP must be carefully followed and executed ensuring every step is successfully completed. It is essential that employees understand the full scope of work prior to starting the plan and the potential repercussion if a step is missed or skipped. At Miller Electric, we require that each step is signed off prior to the next step starting. Many companies chase lower-risk work, but we are the partner clients trust to take on responsibility in complex, critical environments.

  4. Closing Out the Plan
In the end, we provide the client with closeout documentation of exactly what happened, the steps taken, and reference documents in case it ever needs to happen again. Once a project is complete, it is essential to provide a report. Every evaluation should include documentation of the results, detailing what was accomplished, and what was learned. As TJ wisely points out, “If you don’t have documentation stating that something was done, how can you ever prove you did it?”

Chad Guinn provides further insight on the importance of documentation. “If you’re the CEO of a company and someone says they did something, are you going to take their word for it?” An auditor will not. An auditor will say, ‘Prove it.’ The only way to do that is to have a report showing proof of completion and the name of the person who completed it. Documentation is the most important thing when closing out an MOP.”

Quality as a Core Promise in Critical Facilities

Reputation is paramount in the critical facilities industry, and that’s why OEMs provide opportunities to us. “They have that trusted relationship with us and know when they send people through that training, we can represent their product, and they are taking on the risk that we will be able to represent their brand,” says Chad. “Most companies are chasing the less risky work, but we are willing to take that risk with our clients because we have that level of trust with them.”

This reason is why many organizations rely on Miller Electric Company not only to execute the work but also to design and author the entire MOP, minimizing downtime and maximizing safety.

“At the end of the day our clients rely on us to look out for their best interest”
